The first ten days of
Dhul-Hijjah are among the most blessed days in the Islamic calendar. These days hold immense spiritual significance, offering Muslims a golden opportunity to increase their worship, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Allah (SWT).
Why Are the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah So Special?
Allah (SWT) swears by these days in the Quran:
"By the dawn, and by the ten nights..." (Quran 89:1-2)
Many scholars believe that these "ten nights" refer to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also emphasized their importance:
"There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." (Bukhari)
This means that good deeds performed during these days—such as prayer, fasting, charity, and dhikr—carry greater rewards than at any other time of the year (except Ramadan).

Key Sunnah Acts to Follow in the First Ten Days
1. Fasting (Especially on the Day of Arafah)
Fasting during these days is highly recommended, particularly on the
9th of Dhul-Hijjah (Day of Arafah). The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year." (Muslim)
Even if you cannot fast all nine days, try to at least fast on the Day of Arafah.
2. Increased Dhikr (Takbeer, Tahmeed, Tasbeeh)
From the 1st until the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, Muslims are encouraged to recite:
- Takbeer: Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
- Tahmeed: Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah)
- Tasbeeh: SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
This practice reminds us of Allah’s greatness and keeps our hearts connected to Him.
3. Performing Qurbani (Sacrifice)
For those who can afford it, offering an
Udhiyah (Qurbani) on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul-Hijjah is a Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and a means of drawing closer to Allah. The meat is distributed among family, friends, and the needy.
4. Increased Charity (Sadaqah)
These days are an excellent time to give charity, as the rewards are multiplied. Donate to those in need, support orphans, or contribute to Islamic causes.
5. Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness
Use these blessed days to sincerely repent, make
dua, and seek Allah’s mercy. The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a time for spiritual renewal.
6. Performing Hajj (For Those Who Can)
Hajj, one of the pillars of Islam, takes place during these days. While not everyone can perform Hajj every year, those who do should maximize their worship and intention.
Conclusion
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a divine gift—a chance to earn immense rewards, purify our souls, and strengthen our faith. Let us make the most of them by engaging in righteous deeds, following the Sunnah, and increasing our devotion to Allah (SWT).
May Allah accept our efforts and grant us the blessings of these sacred days.
Ameen.
